Top Five Best Things to Do with Kids in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The first time I visited Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I was surprised at how many things there are to see and do for families with children. Kuala Lumpur (KL) is a big city, with the usual traffic problems, stresses and rushing, bustling people any city in the world has. So, when I realized KL is actually quite kid-friendly, it was a nice surprise. For families with children on holiday in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur is a great place to take your kids and here’s why.

Petrosains Discovery Center - I acquire no bones about the fact that Suria KLCC Mall is one of my favorite places in Kuala Lumpur. It’s also a wonderful place for kids as there’s a place called Petrosains Discovery Center, on the top floor (4th floor) of the mall. Petrosains Discovery Center is owned by the same company that owns the famous Petronas Tower, and is a place where kids can learn all about the science of petroleum using all five senses. Now, as an adult, this might sound like it’s quite boring but the Petrosains Center have done it in such a way that the whole place is fun. There’s more than 150 exhibits, with a ton of interactive things for kids to play with (while learning at the same time), and even cool displays about dinosaurs and space. There are rides and dioramas and, even a vast shop, where you can purchase toys and games based on science and petroleum. The Petrosains Discovery Center will take at least a couple of hours to look around – then head out into the mall to eat at one of the many kid-friendly restaurants.

Petronas Towers - Another tall place to capture kids is the Petronas Towers, which used to be the world’s tallest building. They’re located at Suria KLCC Mall so you can conveivably visit the Petrosains Discovery Center and then go up the Petronas Towers afterwards. Tickets are free to go up the Petronas Towers, you just have to get them at the Petronas Towers desk in the basement of Suria KLCC Mall. They are free, but it’s first approach first served, so get there early as they’re gone very fast. You can also only order tickets for the same day. Kids love going up the Petronas Towers, although you can only go to the sky bridge, which is half-way up the view is still spectacular. Afterwards, visit the park right outside the mall – there’s a man-man lake, rides for the kids and some really pretty gardens.

Visit One of the Many Kuala Lumpur Theme Parks - There are a lot of theme parks in and around Kuala Lumpur and we all know kids treasure theme parks. Try Sunway Lagoon Park, which is one of the largest water parks I’ve ever been to, or Genting Highlands Theme Park with its more than 40 rides and a Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum. Mines Wonderland, just outside KL, is also cool – literally – as it has a snow house where kids can throw snowballs and go sledding.

Kampung Kuantan Fireflies - You can take a boat on the river at night in Kampung Kuantan and see the millions of fireflies all lit up like fairy lights. Kids will love this as it’s not only pretty but they can also try to catch them in their hands. The boat scuttle is fun too!

Shop and Have Fun at Berjaya Times Square Mall - I love Berjaya Times Square Mall and so do a lot of kids, for two reasons. First of all, Times Square has a lot of shops that sell things kids will love – toys, cheap jewelry, games, cool t shirts, DVDs, computer games and lots more stuff. They also have one of the largest indoor theme parks in Asia, Cosmo’s Theme Park, with loads of machines where you can play games or win things, take a toddle like the rollercoaster, or watch a movie on a screen that’s five storeys high. Berjaya Times Square Mall also has many kid-friendly restaurants like McDonalds, KFC, Wendy’s, Subway and snack places that sell chocolate, pop corn, candy etc. You and your kids can spend the whole day at Berjaya riding rides in the theme park, shopping, watching a movie and eating.

These five best things to do with kids in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is only the beginning. Even if you spend a week or two in the city with your family, there’s plenty to retain the kids occupied and having fun and, thus, making the parents less stressed.

Travel Guide for Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Public Transport

This guide helps the traveler with the next step when arriving in Malaysia’s KLIA or LCCT Airport; explaining tourists about the transport options.

When visiting Kuala Lumpur for the first time, traffic might feel chaotic at first, however a traveler will soon feel at home and get a good feel for Kuala Lumpur’s transportation systems.

Kuala Lumpur offers many alternative transport options. Bus, monorail, whisper and taxi are all fast and safe. Traveling this diagram also gives more pleasure, enjoyment and the best views of this magnificent city.

Kuala Lumpur by Air

Most people will go to Malaysia by air, either arriving at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport), LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) both located 60 kilometers South of the city center or Subang Airport (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport) 20 kilometers West of the city center.

From KLIA and LCCT there is a variety of transport options to invent it to the city, busses, taxis and the KLIA Express; all lift less than one hour to Kuala Lumpur City and the major Kuala Lumpur hotels. From Subang Airport the only option is by road, taxi is the fastest means of transportation and takes about 30 minutes to the booming heart of KL.

Busses Crowded But Fun to Do

Busses are a great intention to travel, crowded but cheap in the city center. RM1 or RM2 bus ticket lasts all day. When traveling outside of Kuala Lumpur the bus is the best option. Inexpensive transport travels to any destination within the Peninsular. Buses leave from various bus stations in the city; KL Main Bus station Puduraya at Jalan Pudu, Putra Bus Terminal at Jalan Putra, Duta Bus Terminal at Jalan Duta and Pekeliling Bus Terminal near Titiwangsa. Most operators offer standard or luxury options. With the local bus operators any destination can be reached, Genting, Penang, Melaka, Johor Bahru, Langkawi, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bahru and all other major cities including Singapore.

Driving a Car in Kuala Lumpur

Driving in KL can be disorientating as highways are not built like other major cities. Road users apply their own set of rules, drive carefully is the best advice. Major car rental dealer can be found at all airports.

Kuala Lumpur’s Novel Monorail System

KL Monorail is a perfect intra-city public transit system. KL Monorail operates from KL Sentral to Titiwangsa over a distance of nearly 9 kilometers. With its 11 stations stopping at major destinations in the city it is the most ideal form of transport. Over rush hour it might be a bit crowded.

Motorbike Not an Ideal Way of Transport

Thousands and thousands of small motorbikes swarm the city. Unless there is no other option renting a motorbike within the city is possible. Owners of cars have no respect for motorbikes.

Taxi Arrive In Many Colors And Sizes

Yellow cabs, abundant and relatively cheap can be found everywhere in Kuala Lumpur. Two main systems exist, vouchers and general pick-up. Vouchers can be bought at major taxi stands around the city. There is a plot price from point of departure to any destination. Taxis should use the meter which should start at RM3 (US$0.90). When a taxi does not drive on the meter, find another one; or agree on a price. After midnight there are no rules.

Local Trains

This is where KL traffic really gets interesting. Five different train companies operate within the Klang Valley. They do not always inter-connect at the same location; hopping from one speak to the next might take as much as a 500 meter walk. Monorail, Putra, Star, KLIA express, Komuter KTM are all generous services and a great means of transport, cheap and pretty efficient.

National Trains Services

KL Sentral train station offers trains to serve the south all the way to Singapore, and the north to Kedah and Kelantan even crossing into Thailand and on to Bangkok. Trains are a magical means of transport; a variety of landscapes passes by while the traveler sits back and relaxes.

Walking The Streets of Kuala Lumpur

Car drivers, taxis, motorbikes and busses offer no respect to pedestrians, our best tip can only be, be careful and stay on the pavement.

Traffic Jams Bring Mayhem to The City

Kuala Lumpur is notorious for its early morning and after work traffic jams, try to avoid these hours as a tourist.

Road Signage Not Clear and Bold

Signage in Malaysia is not always as one may expect, Asian street signs have often no hard rules, bold and clear directions are hard to get. Owning a map is a must for every tourist. Not all signage is in English.

Traveling in Malaysia can be a small adventure. But traveling in and around Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia is a true pleasure.

Depending on what country you are coming from, some cheap domestic airlines are Tiger Air, Jetstar, Asia Air, Cebu Air, and Vietnam Air. Sometimes you can get $1 sales and pay nothing but taxes and fees if you time it right.

Accommodation: Most all travel agencies have special agreements with a number of hotels in town, and offer rooms at extremely discounted rates, sometimes more than 50% off the published price. It’s worth your while to send a few emails asking for quotes and a web link to their sponsored hotels. In Cambodia, there’s hardly such a thing as a fixed price, so feel free to bargain…especially if it’s not during tourist season. You can find a list of travel agencies at http://www.yellowpages-cambodia.com/ if you search for “travel agency.”

Another option that will appeal especially to the adventurer/backpacker crowd is the plethora of guesthouses in Cambodia, especially Phnom Penh. These range from a $3 per night room with nothing but a bare mattress and a fan, up to the $20 or more per night places, some of which are quite nice. Just because something is more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s nicer…prices seem to be set without rhyme or reason in Cambodia, so take a few extra minutes to read the reviews on the Internet (you’d be surprised at how many reviews you can find online of even the most obscure shanty to call itself a guesthouse). There are many good websites that you can book these through, one of which is www.hostelbookers.com. The most popular area for backpackers is the area around Boeng Kak Lake in Phnom Penh. Another popular area is around the Independence Monument, where restaurants, cafes, shopping and nightlife abound.

Transportation: The cheapest mode of transportation is renting a motorbike, which costs between $3 – $7 per day. However, the traffic in Cambodia is chaotic and extremely dangerous. Also, if your rented motorbike is stolen, you might wind up responsible for the replacement cost. The other option is to rob the motortaxis and tuk tuks that can be found on almost every street corner. Most rides cost 75 cents or less per person and the tuk tuks are a fun way to win out and see the city. If you are seeking to do as the locals do, hire a ride in a shared van…for about 25 cents, you will be squeezed into a vehicle in which they pack people so tight, many times they are virtually hanging out the window.

Food: If you want to catch the risk, you can eat at the local markets and street stalls for around a dollar or less per meal. There is some delicious street food that is certainly worth a try, such as fried noodles and rice, curry, and for those wanting a true taste of Cambodian Cuisine, huge steaming plates of fried insects such as crickets, beetles and even tarantulas. However, take extreme caution: you risk getting more than you paid for when you eat at these places, including parasites, hepatitis and many other diseases. Gain sure it’s thoroughly cooked, or just be favorable and stick to the cleaner restaurants. Delicious food of all sorts can be found for $2-$6 per meal all over the city. The most comprehensive guide to dining in Cambodia, including a handy imprint guide, can be found at www.canbypublications.com. You can also find all sorts of hotel listings and activities at their website.

Shopping: The local shopping scene in Cambodia is not to be missed, especially in Phnom Penh. There are three main markets: Psar Thmei, Psar Toul Tum Pong, and Psar Orrussy. Name brand clothing, both real and false, can be bought for next to nothing. CD’s,and DVD’s cost only $1.50, although it’s impossible to pick up any that aren’t pirated. There are also a number of shopping centers and malls, but you will pay extremely inflated prices for what is often identical to what could be found at the cheaper markets (although they do provide an air-conditioned haven on hot days). Be certain to bargain down the price, otherwise they’ll be laughing all the way to the bank…typically start at about half of what they offer and go up until you hit about 60-70% of their asking price, or sometimes even less.

Whatever your reasons for visiting Cambodia, you can manage to have an unforgettable trip even on a tight budget if you follow these tips.
